Today, March 13th, an impressive model of a nava-type sailing ship, measuring 3 meters long, 2.3 meters high, and 80 cm wide, arrived at the historic exhibition of the “Gallerion” collection, located in the building of the former “Arena Trikotaže”. The reconstruction of the model over the past year was carried out by the renowned Rovinj-based model maker Alvise Benussi.
The model was originally built in the second half of the 19th century by Franciscan priests from Red island near Rovinj and had been awaiting restoration for a full 40 years. The restoration was a demanding undertaking: the underwater part of the ship was completely renewed, the anchor and cannons were reconstructed based on original found pieces, and new ropes connecting the masts were added, made from as much as 600 meters of material.
In addition to this model, Aquarium Pula also funded the restoration of two other ship models from the Museum: one well-known as “San Lorenzo”, and another whose name remains unknown.
We extend our gratitude to Mr. Benussi for the reconstruction, as well as to the Rovinj City Museum for entrusting us with these models for an extended period. Their size, construction, and detailing offer a vivid insight into the maritime heritage of western Istria, showcasing the remarkable precision and patience invested in their creation.
