Jellyfish Breeding in the Aquarium
About jellyfish lab
The jellyfish lab was opened in 2024 as an addition to the aquarium exhibit, to showcase attractive jellyfish and their fascinating and complex life cycle. In addition to various species of jellyfish, the unit also features the cultivation of other gelatinous organisms, such as the comb jelly known as the sea walnut (Mnemiopsis leidyi). According to survey results, the jellyfish exhibit has proven to be the most visited and most attractive section of the aquarium for visitors.
Aquarium Pula displays around fifteen species of jellyfish and about twenty other species of polyps. Visitors have the opportunity to learn about the development of jellyfish from the early stages of their life cycle to adulthood and to discover more about their feeding habits.
Jellyfish breeding
Breeding jellyfish in an aquarium requires carefully adjusting their space and living conditions. Specially designed circular tanks, known as kreisel tanks, are used, where the water circulates in gentle, continuous currents, allowing jellyfish to swim freely without the risk of injury. Water is pumped from a collection tank into the kreisel tank. It then returns to the collection tank, passing through filters, protein skimmers, and heating or cooling systems before re-entering the kreisel.
Clean and properly filtered water, maintained at the appropriate temperature and salinity, is very important because jellyfish are highly sensitive to environmental changes. To achieve the required temperature for growth, aquarium chillers and heaters are used. In addition, the use of a protein skimmer is also important. This device removes dissolved organic substances from the water before they break down, helping to keep the water clear.
Regular feeding with plankton provides jellyfish with the energy needed for growth and breeding. Proper care and monitoring of their life cycle allow visitors to observe all stages of jellyfish development, from polyps to adults, and enjoy their beauty.
