On Thursday evening, May 29th, loggerhead turtle Živa arrived at our Rehabilitation Centre. She is estimated to be between 5 and 10 years old, 45 cm in length, and weigh 10 kilograms. A group of Slovenian tourists found her floating near the surface close to the coast near Poreč.
Since her arrival, Živa has been in a very critical and lethargic condition. Her shell is covered with algae and goose barnacles, indicating a prolonged period of reduced mobility. Such symptoms usually suggest hypothermia, although this is unusual for this time of year.
During the initial examination, no external injuries were found that could explain her condition, and the X-ray results were normal. Živa is currently under intensive care, receiving antibiotics and fluids. Today, we will conduct blood tests and an ultrasound to gain a better understanding of the underlying cause of her health issues.
