On Friday, May 29, we celebrated World Turtle Day, which is celebrated every year on May 23, by traditionally returning loggerhead turtles from our care to the sea. On that occasion, we presented to numerous visitors all species of land, freshwater and sea turtles that are found in our Recovery Center.
As every year, a large number of citizens of Pula gathered with their families, as well as numerous tourists and turtle adopters from Slovenia and Germany. The greatest interest was again aroused by the sea turtles Frida, Raul, Zoe, Marlin, Suzi and Kate, who were escorted back to the sea to great applause from the crowd. All of them were found during the past and this year exhausted and covered in crabs, which indicated a long-term inability to move normally. Some required several months of care and rehabilitation for a full recovery.
The visitors were also delighted by other species of turtles, primarily the indigenous and protected small loggerhead turtles, whose size of only ten centimeters attracted the attention of the youngest. Great interest was also caused by the pond turtle, to which we paid special attention this year through the EAZA - the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria "Wetlands for Life" campaign. After the program dedicated to turtles, the socializing continued with music on the Verudela terrace on the roof of the San Giovanni battery.
We would like to thank everyone who marked this special day with us, as well as the entire Pula Aquarium team for their hard work, dedication and joint work.
