On Saturday, February 21st, a loggerhead sea turtle named “Irena” (Caretta caretta), less than five years old, measuring 26.6 cm in shell length and weighing 2.023 kg, arrived at our Rehabilitation Center.
The turtle was found by Irena and Mladen Premate in Debeljak Bay in southern Istria in poor condition—stranded on the shore, with her right rear flipper entangled in a large piece of fishing net.
Upon arrival at the Rehabilitation Center, the flipper was freed, and Irena received immediate care, including fluids, antibiotic treatment, and pain management. An X-ray of the skeleton confirmed the severity of the flipper injury, showing that part of the tissue had died. Irena will undergo further treatment and recovery.
We thank the Premate family for their quick response and for reporting the situation.
