Dr Dušan Palić visits Aquarium Pula as part of the LIFE PINNACARE project

On Monday, 24 August, we welcomed Dr Dušan Palić, veterinarian, professor and Head of the Chair of Fish Diseases and Fisheries Biology at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich). Alongside Aquarium Pula, the university is one of the partners in the LIFE PINNACARE – Conservation and Restoration of the Noble Pen Shell (Pinna nobilis) project, which runs from 1 October 2025 to 30 November 2029.

Dr Palić visited our Noble Pen Shell Sanctuary, as well as our molecular and microbiological laboratory, which was recently relocated to a new location in the city centre, expanded and further equipped to support future project activities.

As biosecurity is of crucial importance for the successful implementation of project activities, and Dr Palić is one of the project partners’ leading experts in this field, the aim of the visit was to improve measures for reducing the risk of pathogen transmission and spread during key activities. These include collecting noble pen shells from the wild, maintaining them under ex situ conditions, and attempting controlled spawning.

We would like to thank Dr Palić for his visit, knowledge exchange and valuable suggestions, which we will gladly apply in our future work, as well as for the invitation to visit LMU Munich. We look forward to continuing our cooperation and working together on the conservation and restoration of the noble pen shell.
