Today, May 8 at 2 p.m., on the terrace of the San Giovanni Battery, known as the Verudela Terrace, we hosted about thirty participants of a guided tour of the fortifications of the City of Pula, organized by the Viribus Unitis Society and Aquarium Pula as part of the event "Night of the Fortresses in Pula" (May 8 and 9).
Along with refreshments that greeted the visitors, the participants had the opportunity to learn more about the Verudela Fortress and the San Giovanni Battery and their revitalization, with a special emphasis on the great effort invested in reviving the once abandoned spaces and their conversion into an aquarium. Future plans for displaying the original appearance of the fortification during its tour were also presented.
After the introductory part on the terrace, visitors viewed our new exhibition "Austro-Hungarian Fortifications of the City of Pula", located in the battery casemate and available as part of the aquarium tour. The central part of the exhibition consists of two models, the San Giovanni battery and the Verudela fort, made in the proportions of 1:200 and 1:250, with accompanying educational materials on each fortification of the defensive ring of the City of Pula and its surroundings.
The exhibition is further complemented by a 40-minute video material on all the fortifications of the City of Pula and its surroundings, which we use with the permission of the Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria and director Ida Skoko, to whom we would like to express our heartfelt thanks.
With its work to date on the revitalization of the Austro-Hungarian fortifications, the Pula Aquarium represents an example of successful and self-sustainable conversion of cultural heritage, which corresponds to this year's theme of the event "Night of Fortresses Goes Green". The program on the terrace was led by the director, Dr. sc. Milena Mičić and aquarium advisor Žarko Jaković.
