On Thursday, September 12th, we transferred two juvenile noble pen shells to the exhibition space, and a third will soon join them. Despite being kept in a tank with infected individuals, they have survived and are progressing well, leading us to believe they may be potentially resistant to the parasite Haplosporidium pinnae, similar to the pen shell named Morana.
These individuals arrived at the "Noble Sanctuary" in November 2023 as part of the project "Conservation of the Noble Pen Shell (Pinna nobilis) in the Adriatic Sea," and they were collected from collectors in the Bekarija shallows near Poreč.
One pen shell, which measured 44 mm upon arrival, has grown to 54 mm. The second one was 60 mm when it arrived, but with a broken shell, which has since regenerated and now also measures 54 mm.
