Yesterday, November 29, we held an educational workshop "Plastic and Microplastic in the Sea" at the Pula Market for fourth-grade students from local primary schools as part of the EU project WASTEREDUCE, which is part of the Interreg Italy-Croatia 2021 program.
The event began with speeches from Bruno Kostelić, Head of the Department for Nature and Environment Protection of the Istria County, and Dr. Milena Mičić, Director of the Aquarium Pula, who emphasized the importance of educating young people about environmental conservation and the protection of marine ecosystems.
The workshop then continued with an interactive session led by our educators, who explained to the students in simple terms how plastic ends up in the sea, the different types of plastics, and the threats they pose to marine life. The students were introduced to the concept of microplastics and had the opportunity to examine products containing microplastics through a microscope and magnifying glass to better understand how prevalent they are in everyday life. Finally, they had the chance to observe invertebrates and learn about their important role in the marine ecosystem.
