In early May, we placed the first corals in three pools, and the opening of the permanent exhibition "Tropical Coral Reef" will take place on May 27 at 12 noon, when, in addition to the permanent exhibition, we will also open the Canon World Unseen exhibition.
The first pool contains the genera Gorgonia, Rhodactis, Sarcophyton, Sinularia, Capnella and Ricordea, the second pool contains the genera Favia, Hydnophora, Echinophyllia, Duncanopsammia and Oxypora, and the third pool contains Montipora, Pocillopora, Stylophora, Heliopora and Hydnophora. Corals from genera such as Favia and Pocillopora tolerate greater variations in water parameters well, i.e. they are characterized by eurivalence and do not require strong water flow, which is why they are ideal as "pioneer" species in the process of establishing a stable system. More sensitive corals, such as the genus Montipora, were added later after the water parameters had completely stabilized.
Before the corals were placed, the pools were carefully prepared for three weeks. The process included bacterial cycling, or enriching the system with beneficial microorganisms, as well as the gradual settlement of fish such as Naso elegans, Labroides dimidiatus, Apogon leptacanthus, Pseudanthias hypselosoma and Siganus vulpinus. So-called live rocks were also added - rocks inhabited by algae, bacteria and small marine organisms whose important role is to remove harmful nitrogen compounds from the water. Copepods, rotifers and phytoplankton were subsequently introduced, which serve as a food source and contribute to maintaining the balance of the marine ecosystem.
The exhibition will be opened on 27.5.2026. starting at 12:00, when we will gather in front of the main entrance to the Pula Aquarium.
