Conservation of the noble pen shell (Pinna nobilis) in the Adriatic Sea

With the aim of saving the noble pen shell (Pinna nobilis) from extinction, a project uniting institutions involved in the protection of pen shells along the Croatian coast of the Adriatic was launched at the end of 2020. With co-financing from the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, partners from the northern, central, and southern Adriatic are striving to preserve the species through the following activities:

  • monitoring locations of surviving individuals
  • installing collectors to capture juveniles
  • maintaining adults and larvae under controlled (ex-situ) conditions
  • raising public awareness through various educational activities.

By signing agreements with the coordinators for the northern and central Adriatic (PI Brijuni National Park and PI Telašćica), Aquarium Pula has officially become a partner in the project — namely, the main institution in Croatia responsible for maintaining juvenile and adult pen shells under controlled (ex-situ) conditions. The project is carried out within the framework of the national programme for the conservation of the noble pen shell (Pinna nobilis) in the Adriatic Sea, coordinated by the Institute for Environmental Protection and Nature of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of the Republic of Croatia.
