This month, on 13 September 2026, a loggerhead sea turtle named Elli arrived at our Rescue Centre. She measures approximately 44 cm in length, weighs 12.9 kg, and is estimated to be between 5 and 10 years old.
Elli was found by Kerstin, Heiko, Elli, Jonas and Jan from Germany while sailing near Funtana, on the western coast of Istria. She was floating at the sea surface and had been unable to dive for an extended period of time.
Upon arrival at the Rescue Centre, Elli underwent a veterinary examination and was diagnosed with debilitated turtle syndrome. The syndrome can have various causes and is most commonly characterised by lethargy, an inability to swim normally, and extensive barnacle coverage.
We removed the barnacles, and Elli has since been resting and recovering well. She is feeding normally, and we hope to be able to return her to her natural habitat soon.
We would like to sincerely thank her rescuers for promptly contacting us and helping Elli, as well as for providing us with their photographs.
