Loggerhead Turtle Juli Arrives at the Rescue Center

Today, July 24, a new resident, a juvenile loggerhead turtle named Juli, arrived at our Rescue Center. She shows the same symptoms as the other turtles admitted in the past two weeks: lethargy, undernourishment, and dense barnacle overgrowth on her shell.

Juli was found by the Marić Pfannkuchen family near the islet of Porera, opposite the settlement of Barbariga on the western coast of Istria. They transported her by boat to the port of Pula, where she was received by our staff.

Upon arrival, Juli immediately received first aid, and we began the gradual removal of the dense barnacle growth from her shell.

Currently, there are 11 turtles at our Rescue Center: eight juveniles and three subadults. Among the subadults, two are still undergoing treatment, while one is in the recovery phase. The juvenile turtles that arrived over the past two weekends are progressing steadily under constant care, gaining weight and having the barnacle growth removed daily, which is gradually becoming harder and more resilient.

The turtle Frida still has difficulty diving to the bottom due to gas accumulation, but frequent feeding helps stimulate her metabolism to speed up gas absorption. We believe she will soon begin to recover as well.

We sincerely thank the Marić Pfannkuchen family for quickly reporting and transporting Juli!
