Maintaining noble pen sells in controlled conditions requires a complex care system, daily monitoring, research into their breeding potential, and timely delivery of specialized equipment.
Gebrüder Weiss, one of the world's leading logistics and transport companies headquartered in Austria, recognized the importance of preserving this endangered species back in May 2021 and established cooperation with Aquarium Pula. Since then, their reliable logistical support has enabled the laboratory to operate smoothly and noble pen shell conservation activities to be carried out in our Noble Sanctuary.
Aquarium Pula has been actively involved in the protection of the noble pen shell (Pinna nobilis) since 2019. As part of the conservation program, we maintain individuals in controlled conditions, free from the presence of the parasite responsible for the mass death of noble pen shells throughout the Mediterranean, and we monitor their development and investigate their breeding potential.
Our Noble Sanctuary currently houses 23 pen shells of different species, including 12 noble pen shells in various stages of development. Each of them is important for understanding the possibility of recovery of this endangered species, and Morana stands out in particular, a noble pen shells potentially resistant to the deadly parasite.
We would like to thank our partner Gebrüder Weiss for their continuous support, trust and early recognition of the importance of preserving one of the most endangered species of the Adriatic Sea. By working together, we contribute to its long-term recovery and survival.
