Threasher shark seen near Verudela

Recently, a shark was spotted in the Verudela area, near Sveta Stijena, approximately 40 meters from the shore, most likely a thresher shark (Alopias vulpinus). The gentleman who spotted it sent us a photo for identification, on which the characteristic elongated upper lobe of the caudal fin is clearly visible. The thresher shark uses this caudal fin as a weapon in hunting; it stuns schools of small blue fish, such as sardines and anchovies, which form the basis of its diet. According to the finder, this is exactly what it was doing at the time it was spotted.

This species can grow to almost six meters in total length and weigh about 340 kilograms, and the tail and rear part of the body of the spotted individual were about 3 meters long. It mainly inhabits the more open and warmer parts of the Adriatic Sea, and only occasionally approaches coastal areas, which is why such sightings are very rare. It is important to note that this is a strictly protected species that is listed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, which means that it is at increased risk of extinction.

Despite its size, the thresher shark is considered harmless to humans due to its peaceful nature, avoidance of contact with people, and small teeth. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the gentleman who shared his interesting find and picture with us!
