LIFE PINNACARE Project Partners Meeting – Conservation of the Noble Pen Shell (Pinna nobilis)

Today, January 21st, we participated in the first partner meeting of the project “LIFE PINNACARE – Conservation and Restoration of the Noble Pen Shell (Pinna nobilis)”, held at the Catholic University of Valencia San Vicente Mártir in Spain. At the meeting, Dr. Milena Mičić, director of Aquarium Pula, presented the aquarium’s work in the conservation of noble pen shells and its role in the project, which will run until the end of November 2029.

Aquarium Pula’s main role in the project is the breeding of noble pen shells under controlled conditions, with the aim of potentially rearing juveniles for release into their natural habitats and for scientific research. Activities include studying optimal husbandry conditions, developing methods to induce spawning, maintaining larvae during their development, and conducting genetic analyses to assess the health and resilience of individuals.

All project partners—from Spain, Germany, France, Greece, Italy, and Croatia—are involved in identifying new areas suitable for reintroduction, monitoring remaining natural populations, and preserving natural reservoirs: habitats rich in individuals that can be used for repopulation and experimental research. Such habitats are located in Spain, France, Italy, and Greece.

Additionally, protocols are being developed for the transport of individuals to minimize stress during relocation, as well as biosafety protocols.
